Discussion:
Backflip.com (and similar bookmark-sharing services)

What's everyone using to manage/share their bookmarks online?

Ideally I'm looking for a single service that combines public and
private link collections, categories/folders, import/export, support
for multiple browsers, etc.

Is Backflip still viable? I'm there now trying to set up an account and
the "Add Favorites" feature is apparently written for IE5. Hmmmm...

Thanks in advance,

Kevin,
Backflip is certainly a viable option. Personally, I prefer
iKeepBookmarks.com, which I find very serviceable.

I'd also call your attention to Furl -- like iKeepBookmarks and
Backflip, it enables you to save your bookmarks, but IN ADDITION, it
also enables you to save entire websites. Now you don't have to worry
about websites disappearing, once you've saved a site on Furl, it's
there for you for as long as you want, regardless of what happens to the
original version. Once you've got a little collection of sites, Furl
enables you to search within your collection AND it enables you to send
it to others AND, with its new Recommend feature, will send you new
links based on what you've already saved to Furl. The service has been
online since Jan. of this year and technically is still in Beta testing.
I haven't been able to dig as deeply into this as I want yet, but it
looks mighty good!

If you're interested, you can go to this blog page for a fuller
discussion: http://battellemedia.com/archives/000591.php

And, oh yeah, the url for Furl is:
http://www.furl.net/index.jsp And ahhhh, by the way, it's FREE too.

Thanks to all who responded so quickly! Backflip was my go-to choice, I
was dissapointed when it didn't work. Special thanks however go to
Gordon Brune for his collection of links and Todd Slater for the
multiple (!) plugs of Bookmark4U http://bookmark4u.sourceforge.net/ -
that's what I'm using now. It's awesome! Try the v2.0 release yourself
here:

http://bookmark4u.sourceforge.net/v2.0.0/index.php?userid=test&passwd=test

If that link wraps or isn't clickable, try: http://tinyurl.com/3rwxm.

Using this service, I can now have as many bookmark "collections" as I
want - one for myself personally, one just for school, one for a
special project, all password protected and database driven. The
Bookmark4U UI (user interface) is excellent. Installation wasn't too
bad. Definitely worth a look if you can find a decent web host.

Best, kj

I use http://www.ikeepbookmarks.com
This has a pop up for adding bookmarks that works well with both
Netscape and IE.

One thing to keep in mind. These sites are great if they are up but they
can crash like any site. Backflip was down for over a week one time. I got
the impression that they were unsure whether they would ever be able to
get our bookmarks up again.

Have any of you tried www.portaportal.com ? I like it much better than
backflip. It allows you to set up your own categories and also lets you
give some background info on the link. I like that because sometimes I
forge what the link actually is about, but this way I can put a little info
in there and it jogs this old brain. :)

I use three on-line bookmark storage sites.

www.Backflip.com
This was the first bookmark service that I used. I teach evening graduate
classes and used this at several different schools. When it works it is
great. I still use it. BUT, it had downtime and didn't work at all schools
because of the school security. The search also did not work. Browsing the
works of others has some surprises. If you have time you can find bookmarks
and people who are GREAT. Unfortunately, if you're in a school your students
may get into some things that may not be appropriate.

www.iKeepBookmarks.com
I use this to help me find shared bookmarks. The search feature really works
well. For example, the search for 'animated' graphics finds some great
resources that other teachers have collected.

www.mybookmarks.com
This is what I now use most. My search (for my own bookmarks) works well. It
has been down only once and works everywhere. You can't search the works of
others.

www.furl.net
I use Furl to find trends and movement to sites. Great resource.

Don't forget blogs. The RSS feeds from them are quite good especially
because the content is so specific to one's preferences. But I've already
gone beyond the question asked.

There has been some question about Backflip's financial stability.
That's one of the reasons I chose iKeepBookmarks.
Jeff, how long ago was Backflip down?
